Abaissement du niveau mental refers to a state in which the level of conscious control and mental regulation is lowered. Attention, judgment, and goal-directed thinking lose dominance, allowing pre-conscious or unconscious material to surface more freely. The mind becomes less organizing and more permeable.

Symbolically, this state represents a lowering of the inner threshold. The clear boundary between ego and inner content loosens. Images, affects, impulses, and fragmentary thoughts emerge without strong filtering. Consciousness loses height but gains depth and raw immediacy.

In parapsychological contexts, abaissement du niveau mental is considered a precondition for anomalous experiences: spontaneous imagery, automatisms, intuitive breakthroughs, or paranormal impressions. At the same time, it is an ambivalent condition. Without grounding, it may lead to confusion, flooding, or regressive patterns.

On a symbolic level, the term expresses the idea that insight arises not only through elevation, but also through descent. Not everything becomes visible through clarity; some things appear only when control loosens.
