Adonism
Adonism
Meaning & Origin:
Adonism is a mystical–erotic religion and occult doctrine founded in the 1920s in Germany by the occultist Franz Sättler, who wrote under the name Dr. Musallam.
The movement centers on the worship of the god Adonis — symbol of divine beauty, vitality, and rebirth — and draws from ancient Near Eastern mysteries, Hermetic philosophy, and modern ritual magic.
Adonism represents a syncretic system, blending pagan, Gnostic, and theosophical elements into a path of illumination through sensuality and transformation.
Esoteric Significance:
-
In Adonist teaching, Adonis embodies the living light descending into matter, dying and being reborn — the eternal rhythm of divine manifestation.
-
His veneration seeks the awakening of sacred Eros — the union of spirit and nature, divine and human love.
-
Adonism proclaims the holiness of sensuality, seeing the erotic principle not as sin, but as a path to transcendence.
-
At its core, the doctrine expresses a dual unity: light and darkness, god and daemon, masculine and feminine as complementary poles of one creative Whole.
Occult Context:
Sättler’s Adonism arose amid the vibrant interwar occult revival, when mystics and magicians sought to reconcile myth, sexuality, and spiritual freedom.
It rejects dogmatic morality and celebrates the sovereignty of spiritual will, seeing divine revelation in both ecstasy and nature.
Because of its antichristian tone and sexual symbolism, the movement was condemned by mainstream religious and academic circles of its time.
Spiritual Symbolism:
On an esoteric level, Adonism can be read as a myth of divine beauty made flesh — the descent of spirit into the world to rediscover itself in form.
It calls the seeker to perceive the sacred in the human, to overcome the dualism of body and soul, and to recognize the erotic current as a manifestation of divine creation itself.
