Alfred Russel Wallace

Alfred Russel Wallace

Alfred Russel Wallace was a 19th century British naturalist, biologist and thinker, who, along with Darwin, was one of the Founders of the theory of evolution through natural selection are counted. What is less known, however, is that Wallace later dealt intensively with spiritualism, media phenomena and psychological phenomena. This made him an unusual figure at the interface between natural science and frontier research.

Symbolically, Wallace stands for the principle of the double search for order. On the one hand he explored the material world – species, landscapes, biological development – but on the other hand he addressed questions that went beyond purely mechanical explanations. It embodies the attempt not to treat visible and invisible reality as opposites.

Parapsychologically and symbolically, Wallace can be understood as a figure of the scientific border crosser. Unlike the stereotypical occultist, he did not come from a magical tradition but from empirical observation. This is precisely why his turn to spiritualistic phenomena is interesting: he was of the opinion that unusual experiences should not be automatically discarded just because they do not fit into existing models. For him, the unknown was not evidence of the supernatural, but a call to expand thinking.

In a deeper symbolic meaning, Alfred Russel Wallace stands for the tension between explanation and mystery. He reminds us that knowledge does not always consist in eliminating the mystery; sometimes it means accepting that reality may be greater than the current tools of its description. Wallace embodies the type of researcher who doesn't want to choose between science and wonder, but tries to endure both at the same time.
