The Banshee (Irish Bean Sí or Bean Sidhe = "woman of the fairy hills" or "woman from the Otherworld”) is a figure from Irish and Celtic folklore. She is considered a female spirit being whose lament announces the impending death of a person. The banshee does not cause death itself, but appears as a harbinger or death messenger, which indicates an approaching fateful event.
In the traditions she is described differently: as a young, beautiful woman, as a veiled figure, as an old woman or as a ghostly apparition with long hair. What the reports have in common is their characteristic wailing cry, the so-called Keening, a piercing dirge traditionally associated with death and farewell.
Symbolically, the banshee stands for the principle of announcement of the inevitable. It does not embody death itself, but rather the knowledge that certain transitions cannot be prevented. Their appearance marks the threshold between life and death, present and future, known and unknown.
Parapsychologically-symbolically, the banshee belongs close to crisis phenomena and death premonitions. Many reports describe perceptions of voices, complaints or figures shortly before the death of a relative. In psychological research, such experiences have often been interpreted as spontaneous premonition phenomena or symbolic manifestations of emotional bonds.
Unlike demonic creatures, the banshee in traditional lore is not inherently evil. She fulfills more of the role of a messenger. Her crying is an expression of sadness and compassion. As a result, it has an ambivalent nature: it frightens because it announces death and at the same time comforts because it accompanies its occurrence.
In a deeper symbolic meaning, the banshee embodies the archetype of the Guardian of the Threshold. It reminds us that every transition is accompanied by loss and that saying goodbye is an inevitable part of life. Her lament symbolizes the voice of transience itself. At the same time, she points to the idea that there is a connection between worlds and that important changes are sometimes announced by signs before they become visible. The banshee is therefore a symbol for the awareness of finiteness - and for the mysterious sense of what lies beyond the known limits.
