True Name: Alphonse Louis Constant (1810–1875)
Path and Work:
Eliphas Lévi is regarded as one of the great revivers of hidden wisdom in the 19th century. He wove together streams of Christian mysticism, Kabbalistic secret doctrine, and Hermetic magic into a system meant to offer the “Key to the Great Mysteries.”
Esoteric Significance:
Lévi saw magic as the science of the invisible and as the art of bringing the forces of the macrocosm into action within the microcosm of the human being.
His image of Baphomet, the horned figure of wisdom, symbolizes the union of opposites: light and shadow, male and female, spirit and matter.
In his works, especially Dogma and Ritual of High Magic and The Key to the Great Mysteries, he reveals the law of correspondence: “As above, so below — as within, so without.”
Legacy:
His writings became a wellspring of inspiration for secret orders, magicians, and esoteric seekers of modern times. Lévi stands as a bridge between the ancient tradition of the Kabbalah and the modern Western Mystery Tradition.
