Feng Shui
Harmony in flow – the ancient art of aligning space with the energy of life
Definition:
Feng Shui (Chinese: ι’¨ζ°΄, literally “Wind and Water”) is an ancient Taoist practice from China that focuses on harmonizing human environments with the natural flow of life energy (Qi). It is both a spiritual philosophy and a practical system of spatial design, aiming to enhance well-being, prosperity, and inner balance by arranging surroundings in alignment with cosmic and terrestrial forces.
Feng Shui views homes, workplaces, and landscapes as living energetic fields, and uses specific tools and principles to guide the flow of Qi so that it supports physical health, emotional peace, and spiritual growth.
Principle | Meaning |
---|---|
Qi (Chi) | The vital life force that flows through all things – can be blocked, dispersed, or harmonized |
Yin & Yang | The balance of opposites – such as dark/light, quiet/active, soft/firm |
Five Elements | Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water – each representing cycles of transformation |
Bagua Map | An octagonal energy grid overlay used to analyze spaces and life areas |
Form & Compass Schools | Two main approaches – one based on landscape and shape, the other on cardinal directions |
The Bagua is a foundational Feng Shui tool that divides a space into nine life areas, each connected to a specific aspect of human experience:
Sector | Associated Life Theme |
---|---|
Career | Life path, purpose |
Knowledge | Wisdom, self-cultivation, spiritual study |
Family | Roots, ancestors, emotional stability |
Wealth | Prosperity, abundance, inner richness |
Fame | Recognition, self-expression, clarity |
Love & Partnership | Relationships, intimacy, connection |
Creativity & Children | Fertility, innovation, joy |
Helpful People & Travel | Support, synchronicity, movement |
Center (Tai Chi) | Health, balance, spiritual grounding |
The outer reflects the inner: Your space mirrors your consciousness

Energy alchemy: Blockages in your environment can be shifted using ritual, symbolism, or energetic intention
Space as a being: Every location has its own “Qi signature” that can be nurtured and transformed

Plants | Bring vitality, purify air, enliven space |
Crystals | Cleanse, anchor, or focus energy |
Fountains | Activate water element – often for wealth or career areas |
