Spiritual Life Philosophy from Hawaii
Definition:
Huna is a spiritual teaching based on the traditional wisdom of Hawaii and popularized in the 20th century by the American author Max Freedom Long. The term "Huna" means "secret" in Hawaiian. Long claimed to have deciphered the esoteric principles of the Kahunas (Hawaiian sages, healers, or shamans) and developed a holistic system to promote personal development, healing, and spiritual growth.
The Seven Huna Principles:
The central teaching of Huna consists of seven universal principles that serve as a guide for a fulfilling, conscious life:
IKE – The world is what you believe it to be.
Our perception determines our reality. Consciousness is creative.
KALA – There are no limits.
Everything is interconnected; limitations exist only in thought.
MAKIA – Energy follows attention.
Wherever we focus our thoughts, our life energy flows.
MANAWA – Now is the moment of power.
Change and action are only possible in the present moment.
ALOHA – To love means to be happy with…
Love, harmony, and appreciation are the foundation of interpersonal relationships.
MANA – All power comes from within.
Every person possesses their own spiritual power and responsibility for their life.
PONO – Effectiveness is the measure of truth.
There is no single "right" way – what works is right.
Application:
Huna is used in modern spiritual practices such as meditation, visualization, breathing techniques, energy work, and life coaching. It is often used to release blockages, promote inner balance, and create a conscious, joyful life.
Criticism:
While many people value Huna as a powerful tool for life, the authenticity of modern Huna teachings is viewed critically. Hawaiian cultural scholars, in particular, point out that Max Freedom Long's version of Huna is not identical to the actual spiritual practice of the Kahunas. Rather, it is a Western-influenced, esoteric-spiritual reinterpretation of traditional elements.
