Muhammad ibn Abdullah (c. 570–632 CE) was a prophet, statesman, and spiritual leader from Mecca (in modern-day Saudi Arabia). He is regarded by Muslims as the last prophet in a long line that includes Abraham, Moses, and Jesus.
In Islam, he is called "the Seal of the Prophets" (Khatam an-Nabiyyin)—the final messenger who brought the complete and final revelation from God (Allah) in the form of the Qur’an.
Born into the Quraysh tribe in Mecca.
Orphaned at a young age and raised by relatives.
Known as Al-Amin (the trustworthy) even before his prophetic mission.
Worked as a merchant, and later married a wealthy businesswoman named Khadijah.
Muhammad received his first revelation from the angel Jibril (Gabriel) while meditating in the Cave of Hira.
These revelations would continue for 23 years, forming the Qur’an, Islam’s holy book.
Preached monotheism, social justice, care for the poor, and moral accountability.
Faced persecution in Mecca for challenging the status quo (polytheism, tribal power structures).
Migrated to Medina in 622 CE—an event called the Hijra, which marks year 1 in the Islamic calendar.
In Medina, Muhammad became a spiritual leader, judge, and political figure.
United feuding tribes and built a growing community based on Islamic principles.
Returned to Mecca in a peaceful conquest, cleansed the Kaaba of idols, and established Islamic monotheism.
Died in 632 CE in Medina, at about 62 years old.
Buried in the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina—now one of Islam’s holiest sites.
Left behind:
The Qur’an
His example and sayings (Hadith)
A rapidly growing spiritual and political movement that would become a global civilization
Prophet (Nabi) and Messenger (Rasul) of God
Mercy to the worlds (Rahmatan lil-'Alamin)
Perfect example (Uswatun Hasanah) for human conduct
Not divine—just a man, but one chosen and guided by God
Founded Islam, now followed by over 1.9 billion people worldwide.
Deeply shaped law, philosophy, spirituality, art, ethics, and civilization—not just in the Islamic world but globally.
Revered across cultures not just as a religious figure but as one of the most effective leaders and reformers in history.
