Nisargadatta Maharaj

Nisargadatta Maharaj
Nisargadatta Maharaj (1897-1981), born Maruti Shivram Kampli, was one the most important spiritual teachers of the 20th century. He belonged to the Navnath Sampradaya lineage and became known worldwide through the book I Am That, which contains conversations with him and is now considered one of the most important works of modern Advaita literature applies.

Nisargadatta initially led an ordinary life as a family man and business owner in Mumbai. The encounter with his guru Siddharameshwar Maharaj fundamentally changed the path of his life. After years of intensive self-questioning, he came to a realization that became the core of his teaching: The true essence of man is not personality, but the pure consciousness that precedes all experiences.

Symbolically, Nisargadatta stands for the principle of radical return to the origin. His famous command was: "Abide with the feeling I am." He directed attention not to thoughts, feelings or spiritual experiences, but to the naked sensation of being itself. For him, this original "I am" was the gateway to the knowledge of true nature.

Parapsychologically-symbolically, Nisargadatta is remarkable because he attached little importance to extraordinary phenomena. He viewed siddhis, visions, clairvoyance, energy experiences or mystical states as temporary phenomena within consciousness. They could be fascinating, but in his opinion they did not lead to definitive knowledge. What was crucial was the discovery of the one who perceives all experiences.

His teaching discussions were characterized by exceptional directness. He dismantled ideas about personal identity, free will, and individual existence, often with a few precise questions. In doing so, he avoided complex metaphysical systems and repeatedly referred to the immediate experience of current consciousness.

In a deeper symbolic meaning, Nisargadatta embodies the archetype of the teacher of pure being. It represents the insight that truth cannot be found as an object because it is the ground on which every search takes place. His teaching is reminiscent of the ancient mystical insight that what you are looking for is closer than any thought. Nisargadatta symbolizes the return to that original presence that exists before names, roles and stories emerge. His message does not lead to a new identity, but to the discovery of what remains beyond all identities.
