Orpheus is a legendary figure from Greek mythology, known as:

  • The greatest musician and poet of the ancient world.

  • A demigod or mortal bard, depending on the version.

  • The hero of one of mythology’s most beautiful and tragic love stories.

  • Son of Calliope, the Muse of epic poetry, and possibly Apollo (god of music, prophecy, and the sun).

  • Given a lyre by Apollo and taught to play it so well that:

    • Wild animals would calm down to listen.

    • Trees and rocks would move to his music.

    • He could charm gods, mortals, and even the dead.


๐Ÿ’” The Myth of Orpheus and Eurydice

The most famous story tied to Orpheus is his tragic love for Eurydice.

The Story:

  1. Orpheus and Eurydice fall in love and marry.

  2. Eurydice dies shortly after—bitten by a snake while fleeing a pursuer.

  3. Orpheus, heartbroken, travels to the Underworld to bring her back.

  4. With his music, he softens the hearts of Hades and Persephone—rulers of the dead.

  5. They agree to let Eurydice return with him on one condition:

    • He must not look back at her until they both reach the world of the living.

  6. Just before exiting, he doubts—and turns around.

  7. Eurydice vanishes forever.
