Parapsychology is a field of research that deals with extrasensory perception and other supposedly paranormal phenomena – things that (allegedly) lie outside of normal scientific explanatory models. These include, for example:
Telepathy – the transfer of thoughts between people
Clairvoyance – receiving information about events or places without directly perceiving them
Precognition – knowledge of future events before they occur
Psychokinesis – influencing objects or events through sheer willpower
Haunting phenomena or so-called ghost apparitions
Scientific classification:
Parapsychology is highly controversial. Most scientists do not consider it a true science because:
The results are often not reproducible.
There is no conclusive evidence for the existence of these phenomena.
Many studies have methodological weaknesses.
Nevertheless, since the 19th century there has been a serious (albeit small) community of researchers working on these topics – both in universities and private institutes.
