Ragnarök

Ragnarök is the apocalyptic end-time event in Norse mythology – a massive battle between gods, giants, monsters, and other beings that leads to the destruction of the old world and the beginning of a renewed, purified world.

The term comes from Old Norse:

"Ragnarök" (literally: "Fate of the Gods")

or "Ragnarøkkr" ("Twilight of the Gods" or "Downfall of the Gods")

Here are the most important events in sequence:

Portents of the End Times

Three consecutive Fimbulwinters (extremely cold, sunless winters)

Collapse of the social order: fratricide, betrayal, chaos

The world-ash tree Yggdrasil begins to tremble

The great enemies break loose

The Fenris Wolf breaks his bonds

The Midgard Serpent (Jörmungandr) rises from the sea

Loki breaks free and leads the enemies of the gods

The dead from Hel arrive on the ship Naglfar (built from the fingernails of the dead)

The fire giant Surt arrives from Muspelheim with a flaming sword

The final battle on the plain of Vigrid

Odin fights Fenris Wolf – is devoured

Thor kills Jörmungandr – but dies from her poison

Frey fights Surt – dies without his magic sword

Tyr, Heimdall, Loki – many die in mutual rage Battle

Surt sets the world ablaze – everything is consumed by fire and water

Ragnarök is not only an end, but also a new beginning:

The earth emerges renewed from the sea – green, fertile, and peaceful

Some gods survive: Balder, Hödur, Vídar, Váli

Two humans (Líf and Lífthrasir) survive in the World Tree and establish a new humanity

A new sun rises – brighter than the old one
