Sigillenmagie (sigil magic) is the creation and use of symbolic images—sigils—to implant an intention or desire deep into the unconscious mind, where it can manifest in reality.
Instead of invoking gods or spirits, you’re hacking your own subconscious, bypassing rational resistance and engaging the part of your psyche that makes things happen.
Medieval origins: Sigils were originally magical symbols representing angels, demons, or spirits, especially in grimoire traditions like the Key of Solomon or The Lesser Key of Solomon (Lemegeton).
Modern revival: Brought into modern practice by Austin Osman Spare (early 20th century), an English artist and occultist who pioneered the psychological version of sigil magic.
Developed further by chaos magicians in the 1980s–90s like Peter J. Carroll and Phil Hine.
Here’s the classic process, often used in chaos magick:
Keep it clear, positive, and in the present tense.
Example: “I attract creative inspiration.” or “I confidently speak in public.”
Remove repeating letters from the sentence.
Then arrange the remaining letters into a stylized symbol.
Example:
Statement: “I AM CONFIDENT IN SPEAKING”
Remove vowels and duplicates: I A M C O N F D T S P K → [strip down to key letters]
Combine those letters into a visual glyph.
This is the magical “activation.” You want to bypass the conscious mind and impress the sigil on the unconscious:
Methods include:
Meditation
Breathwork
Dance / Trance
Orgasm (yes, this is common in Spare’s method)
Extreme focus or distraction
You do this until the sigil feels "alive"—then release it and forget it. (Forgetting helps bypass the mental blocks of obsession.)
Don’t dwell on the desire.
Allow the subconscious to do its work.
Think of it as planting a seed—don’t dig it up every day.
Automatic drawing (let the hand move intuitively)
Mantras / Word sigils
Digital sigils (glitch art, QR codes, AI-generated)
Enochian or planetary styles (if you like adding layers of correspondences)
It speaks the language of the unconscious: symbols, not logic.
Bypasses the inner critic and mental blocks.
Activates the reticular activating system (RAS), priming you to notice opportunities to manifest your goal.
Creates focus, clarity, and commitment without strain.
