Sophia

Who is Sophia?

Sophia (Greek: Σοφία) means “Wisdom”, and she plays a central role in Gnostic cosmology, Christian mysticism, and later esoteric traditions like Kabbalah, alchemy, and even Jungian psychology.

She is:

  • The divine feminine principle.

  • The emanation of divine wisdom from the Godhead.

  • The fallen spark that becomes the soul of the world (and of humanity).

  • The bridging force between spirit and matter, light and shadow.

📜 Sophia in Gnostic Cosmology

In many Gnostic texts (esp. Nag Hammadi scriptures like the Apocryphon of John, Pistis Sophia, and The Hypostasis of the Archons), Sophia plays a central cosmic role.

✴️ The Gnostic Myth of Sophia:

  1. Sophia emanates from the divine realm (Pleroma), seeking to create without her counterpart.

  2. In her desire, she gives rise to a flawed being—Yaldabaoth (a demiurge), who creates the material world in ignorance.

  3. Realizing this, Sophia falls into the lower realms, becoming trapped in matter.

  4. Her light, however, remains scattered throughout the world—within human souls.

  5. The goal of Gnosis is to awaken that divine spark and return it to the Fullness (Pleroma), reuniting with Sophia and the Divine.
