Stichomancy

Stichomancy (from Greek stíchos meaning verse or line and manteía meaning divination) is a form of divination in which randomly selected lines or verses from written texts are interpreted as symbolic or prophetic messages. It is based on the belief that chance selection is guided by a higher order or intelligence.

Stichomancy assumes that language itself carries a sacred or numinous quality. Written words are seen not merely as conveyors of meaning but as vessels through which destiny, divine will, or unconscious knowledge may speak.
