Vajrayana

Vajrayana (from Sanskrit vajra = “diamond/thunderbolt”, yana = “vehicle”) is an esoteric stream of Buddhism that grew out of Mahayana and became especially prominent in Tibetan Buddhism. The term evokes the indestructible and radiant nature of awakened reality—like a diamond that cannot be shattered or a thunderbolt that cuts through ignorance. Vajrayana practices use rituals, mantras, visualization, and symbolic tools such as mandalas and the vajra-bell pairing to transform every aspect of experience into the path of awakening. It places great emphasis on direct, experiential methods and often requires initiation by a qualified teacher before engaging in certain practices.

Esoterically, the central symbols express the union of wisdom and compassion:

• the bell represents wisdom realizing emptiness
  Together they enact the core Vajrayana insight that form and emptiness are inseparable.
