Ventriloquism (from Latin venter = belly and loqui = to speak) refers to the art of Ventriloquismin which a person gives the impression that a voice comes from a place or being other than themselves. Today, ventriloquism is primarily considered a stage art, but historically it also played an important role in spiritualism, magic and parapsychology.
In ancient times, ventriloquism was sometimes understood as a form of prophetic or spiritual inspiration. The speaker appeared as the medium of a foreign voice. It was only later that it was realized that voices can be created using special breathing and speaking techniques in such a way that their origin is difficult to localize.
Ventriloquism symbolically stands for the principle of the disembodied voice. The voice seemingly detaches itself from its origin and takes on a life of its own. This creates the illusion of a second personality, a spirit or an independent authority. The ventriloquist embodies the human ability to project inner contents outwards and give them a seemingly autonomous existence.
The term has special parapsychological-symbolic meaning because numerous alleged ghost voices, oracle phenomena and media manifestations were later explained as forms of conscious or unconscious ventriloquism. In spiritualistic sessions, the impression could arise that voices came from dark corners of the room, from the dead or from the air itself. Ventriloquism therefore became an important alternative explanation for some media phenomena.
From a psychological point of view, ventriloquism refers to the human ability to externalize inner parts of the personality. The “foreign voice” can express wishes, fears, memories or unconscious impulses that are not directly attributed to oneself. This makes the ventriloquist the embodiment of an ancient mechanism: the splitting and objectification of inner voices.
In a deeper symbolic meaning, ventriloquism stands for the question of the origin of thoughts and inspirations. Where does a voice come from? Is it really alien, or does it come from hidden layers of your own consciousness? Ventriloquism reminds us that people have always wanted to distinguish between internal and external sources. It symbolizes the uncertain boundary between the self and the foreign, between expression and revelation.
