Voodoo (also: Vodou, Vodun, Vudu)
Sacred spirits, ancestral wisdom, and the dance between worlds
Definition:
Voodoo is an African diasporic religion and spiritual practice rooted in the traditional belief systems of West Africa, particularly from regions such as Benin, Nigeria, and Togo. Through the transatlantic slave trade, these traditions were carried to the Caribbean, the Americas, and especially Haiti, where they evolved into forms like Haitian Vodou, Louisiana Voodoo, and West African Vodun.
Voodoo is centered around communion with ancestors, the invocation of spiritual beings known as Loa (or Lwa), and the understanding that the visible world is intertwined with the invisible spiritual realm. Through ritual, music, trance, and offerings, practitioners seek to maintain harmony, healing, and guidance from the divine.
