Speaking in Tongues

Speaking in Tongues

speaking in tongues or glossolalia refers to a state of ecstatic speech in which people produce sounds, syllables or entire speech sequences that do not correspond to any known everyday language. In religious and esoteric traditions, this is often seen as an expression of superpersonal inspiration or as a sign of spiritual permeability.

Speaking in tongues symbolically stands for the principle of language beyond controlled thinking. Ordinary language orders, explains and differentiates; Glossolalia, on the other hand, separates language from its semantic function. Sound takes the place of meaning. This creates the impression that it is no longer the individual speaking, but that something is speaking through the individual.

Parapsychologically and symbolically speaking in tongues can be understood as a form of ritualized disinhibition of linguistic control. Rhythm, group dynamics, emotional charge and trance states reduce conscious speech control while spontaneous sound patterns emerge. For those involved, this often appears highly authentic because the language does not appear to be planned, but emerges immediately.

In a deeper symbolic meaning, speaking in tongues stands for the experience that not every truth can be formulated conceptually. Where the mind reaches its limits, the sound itself begins to carry meaning. Glossolalia is therefore not “nonsense”, but rather a symbolic transgression of rational language. It reminds us that sometimes consciousness cannot communicate, but can only flow through .
