Dia de los Muertos

Culture

Mexican

Purpose

Honoring the Dead

Description

The Day of the Dead is a Mexican celebration where families gather to honor deceased loved ones with altars (ofrendas), marigolds, sugar skulls, and their favorite foods.

History

Roots trace back 3000 years to Aztec rituals honoring the dead goddess Mictecacihuatl. Spanish colonization merged these with Catholic All Saints Day traditions.

How to Practice

Build an ofrenda with photos, candles, marigolds, pan de muerto, and favorite items of the deceased. Visit graves, share stories, and celebrate the lives of those who passed.
