Mindfulness, Harmony, Respect
Chado (The Way of Tea) is a Japanese cultural ritual centered around the ceremonial preparation and drinking of matcha green tea. It embodies zen philosophy.
Developed from Chinese tea rituals by Zen monks in the 15th century. Sen no Rikyu perfected the ceremony in the 16th century around four principles: harmony, respect, purity, tranquility.
The host prepares the room and utensils. Guests enter through a small door (nijiriguchi) showing humility. Matcha is whisked with a bamboo whisk and served with seasonal wagashi sweets.
