Meaning & Origin:
The Kua Number (also Gua Number or Ming Gua) comes from traditional Chinese Feng Shui and the cosmology of the Ba Gua.
It is calculated from a person’s year of birth and gender, and is considered the key to their personal energy pattern, life resonance, and alignment with the cardinal directions.
In classical Feng Shui, the Kua Number represents the fundamental vibration of an individual — their unique position within the universal field of Qi.
A Kua Number reveals the energetic signature of a person — a kind of spiritual fingerprint.
It determines one’s four auspicious directions (Sheng Qi, Tian Yi, Yan Nian, Fu Wei) and four challenging directions (Jue Ming, Wu Gui, Liu Sha, Huo Hai).
Esoterically, the Kua Number indicates how a person receives, transforms, and radiates Qi.
Each Kua Number corresponds to one of the Eight Trigrams of the Ba Gua — archetypal codes of the cosmos.
It describes one’s life path, soul-task, natural strengths, and harmony within the cosmic order.
The Kua Number reflects the dynamic interplay of Yin and Yang, the elements, and the cycles of time.
It connects the individual with the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches, the ancient Chinese principles that structure the unfolding of the universe.
In spiritual tradition, the Kua system is a gateway to self-knowledge — a way to understand one’s role within the mandala of cosmic forces.
1 – Kan (Water): Deep intuition, mystery, transformation.
2 – Kun (Earth): Nurturing, stability, receptive wisdom.
3 – Zhen (Thunder): New beginnings, breakthroughs, pioneer energy.
4 – Xun (Wind): Inspiration, learning, subtle perception.
6 – Qian (Heaven): Authority, creativity, pure spirit.
7 – Dui (Lake): Joy, communication, magnetic attraction.
8 – Gen (Mountain): Meditation, inner stillness, spiritual grounding.
9 – Li (Fire): Clarity, vision, illumination.
(The Kua Number 5 is assigned to 2 (female) or 8 (male) and represents the center of the Ba Gua.)
The Kua Number reveals the soul’s unique tone in the great orchestration of the universe.
It is the imprint of the karmic wind that carries a person through life — and the compass pointing to the direction from which their personal light descends.
In this sense, every human being is a living trigram: a wandering symbol of the cosmos, receiving Qi, transforming it, and returning it to the world.
