Meaning & Origin:
Lo Shu (洛書 — “The Book of the River Lo”) is an ancient Chinese magic square and one of the deepest symbols in Taoist numerology.
According to legend, it appeared on the shell of a sacred turtle rising from the Lo River while Emperor Yu was attempting to tame a great flood.
On the turtle’s back was a pattern of dots — later understood as the 3×3 Lo Shu Square, where each row, column, and diagonal adds up to 15, the number of celestial harmony and lunar fullness.
The Lo Shu is a numerical mandala, a map of the ordered universe where Yin and Yang are in perfect balance.
It forms the mathematical foundation of the Bagua, Feng Shui, and the metaphysical systems of classical China.
Each number (1 through 9) expresses an element, direction, energy quality, and phase of transformation.
The magic sum of 15 corresponds to the 15 days to the full moon, symbolizing completion, harmony, and cyclical ascent.
Esoterically, the Lo Shu is seen as the Script of Heaven, a cosmic code through which celestial forces imprint themselves upon the Earth.
