Oil Pulling (also: oil swishing, oil therapy)
Natural Medicine / Ayurveda / Detox / Oral Health
Definition:
Oil pulling is a traditional Ayurvedic cleansing practice in which plant-based oil is swished in the mouth for several minutes. It is believed to remove toxins, improve oral hygiene, and promote overall well-being.
In the morning on an empty stomach, take about 1 tablespoon of oil (e.g., sunflower, sesame, or coconut oil)
Swish the oil around the mouth for 10–20 minutes, pulling it through the teeth and moving it gently
Do not swallow the oil—spit it out (it is believed to be filled with bacteria/toxins)
Rinse thoroughly with water (some use warm salt water)
Brush teeth as usual
Detoxification of the body (according to traditional belief)
Improved oral flora and gum health
Helps with bad breath, plaque, sensitive gums, and cavity prevention
Reported improvements in skin, digestion, sleep, and energy levels
Limited clinical evidence: Some small studies suggest benefits for oral health
The idea of systemic detox via oil pulling is not scientifically supported
Considered safe as a complementary oral hygiene method when done correctly
Not suitable for those with swallowing difficulties or oil allergies
Not a replacement for dental care or medical treatment
Always spit oil into a tissue or trash, not the sink (to avoid plumbing issues)
