Ri khrod

Ri khrod (Tibetan རི་ཁྲོད་, literally “mountain retreat” or “remote hillside dwelling”) refers to the secluded hermitages of Tibetan yogis and eremitic practitioners. A ri khrod is not a monastery or institution but a place of radical seclusion, often a cave, simple hut, or inaccessible location in high mountains and wilderness.

Symbolically, the ri khrod represents withdrawal from the world of reflections. Social structures, language, and convention are deliberately abandoned so that mind may encounter itself without mediation. The mountain serves as an outer mirror of inner stillness—immovable, vast, uncompromising.

Esoterically, a ri khrod is not a romantic refuge but a testing ground of truth. Without community or ritual support, the practitioner confronts habit, fear, vision, and clarity directly. In this sense, the ri khrod is a place of stripping away: nothing remains to rely on except awareness itself.

In Dzogchen and tantric traditions, ri khrod is considered an ideal resonance space for advanced practice. Many great masters—mahasiddhas, tertöns, Dzogchen yogis—received visions, termas, and direct realization in mountain seclusion. Thus, the ri khrod is less a place of isolation than a site of revelation.
