Tschörten

Chorten (Tibetan mchod-rten) is the Tibetan form of the Buddhist stupa—a sacred monument found throughout Tibet and the Himalayan Buddhist world. These structures serve as reliquaries, pilgrimage markers, and symbolic embodiments of the enlightened mind. Their roots blend ancient cairn-building traditions with the classical Buddhist stupa form from India. In Vajrayana symbolism, a chorten is far more than architecture: it is a three-dimensional mandala representing the Buddhist path to liberation. Each part of the structure corresponds to elements of spiritual realization—earth, water, fire, air, and space—mirroring the progression from ordinary mind to awakened mind. Built to house relics, sacred texts, and consecrated objects, chortens stand as visible reminders of the Buddha’s presence and teachings. Pilgrims often circumambulate them in a clockwise direction to accrue merit and deepen devotion.
