Definition:
Wewelsburg is a triangular castle near Paderborn in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, most infamous for its use by the SS under Heinrich Himmler during the Nazi era. It has become a symbolically charged site due to its association with Nazi occult ideology, SS mysticism, and historical memory.
Originally built between 1603 and 1609 in Weser Renaissance style
In 1934, it was leased and later taken over by the SS
Himmler envisioned it as an ideological center for the SS and a ceremonial space for a new mystic-Germanic elite
Himmler renovated parts of the castle, such as the Obergruppenführer Hall, with features like the Black Sun mosaic
Wewelsburg was intended to function as a “Grail Castle”, inspired by medieval mysticism, runic symbols, and Arthurian legends
Though widely mythologized after 1945, many “occult” elements were amplified postwar, rather than based on systematic SS rituals
