The self-limitation of God in the Kabbalah as taught by Luria. Outline of the theory:
To make creation possible, God, who initially filled everything with his absolute essence, withdrew into himself, creating a free space. God ultimately emerged into this space as a ray of light. Thus, the universe is created, still connected to him but nevertheless objectified in relation to him. Through Knorr von Rosenroth's Kabbalah Denudata, this idea also became known to Christian mystics and was adopted by Schelling.
