The term primarily refers to the Kagyu school, more specifically to the Karmapa, the highest teacher of the Karma Kagyu lineage.
🎩 The Black Hat – Symbol of Power
The "Black Hat" (Tib. shamar) is the most important identifying symbol of the Karmapa, the head of the Karma Kagyu school.
The title "Black Hat Lama" refers to this tradition.
The hat is said to have magical origins:
It was given to the first Karmapa by dakini beings and later officially presented by the Chinese emperor as recognition of spiritual power.

The Black Hat is considered an energetic symbol: When the Karmapa wears it, it is said to concentrate spiritual powers, bless the space, and help see through the illusion of the world.
It is said that the hat is so powerful that it must be kept locked at all times to prevent it from rising into the air.
🔄 Karmapa and Reincarnation
The Karmapas are one of the oldest lineages of consciously reincarnated masters in Tibetan Buddhism—even older than the lineage of the Dalai Lamas.
Each new Karmapa is the incarnation of his predecessor—and later wears the Black Hat again.
